Massive Voter Roll Purge in Hathras: Over 1.89 Lakh Names Removed Ahead of Electoral Review

Hathras district administration removes 1.89 lakh names from the voter list following a major SIR verification drive. With 1.22 lakh voters set to receive notices starting February 27, officials urge citizens to verify their status via the ECI app or offline Form-6 submissions to ensure electoral accuracy and participation in Uttar Pradesh.

HATHRAS — In a significant move to streamline the electoral process and ensure the integrity of democratic participation, the Hathras district administration has struck off 189,616 names from the voter list following an intensive Special Information Report (SIR) verification process. This sweeping administrative cleanup, aimed at weeding out redundancies and inaccuracies, has set the stage for a critical verification phase as officials prepare to reconcile discrepancies involving over a lakh of residents.

According to the District Magistrate, the updated electoral rolls have already been distributed to all registered political parties to maintain transparency and facilitate a collaborative review of the changes. The scale of the revision is substantial; of the names flagged, approximately 122,000 voters could not be verified during the initial matching process. To address this, the administration has announced that formal notices will be dispatched to these individuals starting February 27, providing them a window to clarify their status and reclaim their eligibility if they have been erroneously excluded.

The purge represents a significant shift from the 2022 baseline, where the three assembly constituencies of Hathras district—Hathras, Sadabad, and Sikandra Rao—accounted for a combined total of 1,163,525 registered voters. While the removal of nearly 1.9 lakh names suggests a rigorous de-duplication effort, the administration is simultaneously emphasizing the inclusion of new, eligible citizens. Authorities have streamlined the registration process, urging residents to utilize "Form-6" for new enrollments. This facility is being offered through both traditional offline channels and digital platforms, including the Election Commission of India’s (ECI) dedicated mobile application.

This administrative overhaul underscores a broader commitment to "clean" elections, focusing on the removal of deceased, relocated, or duplicate entries that often clutter local databases. By enforcing a strict deadline for notices and providing accessible digital tools for re-registration, the Hathras district authorities are attempting to balance the need for an accurate census with the fundamental right of every legitimate citizen to cast their vote. As the February 27 deadline approaches, the focus now shifts to public awareness, ensuring that the transition toward a more precise voter registry does not inadvertently disenfranchise the local electorate.
